Meet Recap

The Sulphur Boys Golf Team won the Dickson Comet Invitational Wednesday at Lake Murray Golf Course with a total of 355. 25 different schools competed with a total of 16 full teams. There were 96 golfers total competing. The win marks the first time in 5 years that the Bulldogs have won a tournament away from Sulphur Hills. The end of the tournament was very exciting. It appeared as though the Newcastle Racers were going to finish at 353 (2 strokes ahead of the Bulldogs). With several competitors and fans around the scorers table, the final group which consisted of Sulphur’s Mason Lance, Caleb Williams, Newcastle’s Connor Jones, Byng’s Conner Sawyers, and Dibble’s Derek Selmon came in to sign their scorecard. Everyone knew the tournament was very close between Sulphur, Newcastle, and Blanchard. Newcastle’s Conner Jones had committed a possible rules infraction on #4 by moving a loose impediment inside a marked hazard. The person writing down the scores was unsure of the decision so he had to leave and ask the head golf professional for the correct ruling. With everyone waiting for approximately 5 minutes, he came back and announced the penalty for moving a loose impediment inside a hazard was 2 shots. The penalty caused a 2 way tie for 1st place between Sulphur and Newcastle at 355 with Blanchard finishing just 1 shot back at 356. In this situation, the 5th players score is used to break the tie between the 2 teams (since only 4 scores are used in the team total). Sulphur’s Caleb William’s 98 bested Newcastle’s Skylar Shurow’s 109 and the Bulldogs were awarded 1st place. Jared Williams finished T6 with an 85. Hunter Mann and Dawson Padgett both finished T9 with 89’s. Mason Lance finished T13 with a 92. Caleb Williams finished T29 with a 98. Sulphur’s Individuals Dawson Hinson shot 111 and Ryder Holley carded a 114. Individual and Team results are listed below.

“I was very happy for the boys. They were so excited to get that 1st place trophy. Just last year, we were standing in the exact same cart barn very disappointed after shooting 390 and having missed the regional tournament by 1 stroke. It was great to see the excitement on their faces this time around when they knew we had won. Several of the players practiced on their game this summer and have improved significantly. We still have lots of areas where we can improve but for them to improve 35 shots on that course since last season is pretty impressive. It’s great because it was a true team win with the 5th score being the deciding factor. We have several golfers who all shoot very close together so we don’t rely heavily on one person. Our five scores were 85, 89, 89, 92, 98 while Newcastle’s were 71, 85, 97, 102, 109. Hopefully we can continue to improve as the season progresses.” -Coach T
